When Suvi Haimi and Laura Tirkkonen-Rajasalo looked around their bathrooms, they both saw the same thing: a problem. Aware of the ever-growing amounts of single-use plastic that fills our lives and seas, they set out to find a solution.

As biochemists specializing in biomaterials, Suvi and Laura came up with a sustainable alternative to plastic.

Sulapac® is both beautiful and functional. Like nature. It biodegrades fully without leaving permanent microplastics behind. Sulapac® can be processed with existing plastic product machinery, making the switch from conventional plastic to an eco-friendly alternative easier than you might think.

Sulapac on a timeline

Sulapac was founded in 2016 in Helsinki, Finland. We first focused on packaging, but soon saw how the material can also be used in various other applications. Click through our journey below.

Dr Suvi Haimi and Dr Laura Tirkkonen-Rajasalo founded Sulapac in Helsinki, Finland with a mission to save our planet from the plastic waste. They are both specialized in biomaterials.

2016

Luxepack Monaco win

Sulapac® was awarded as the best green packaging solution at the LUXE PACK in Green Awards in Monaco.

2017

First patent filed

Sulapac’s first patent was approved in 2018 and many new patents are pending to safeguard new material and manufacturing innovations.

2017

First market release for oil emulsion and dry foods

Naviter was the first cosmetic producer to use Sulapac as its packaging for natural cosmetics.

2018

ISO 9001 quality system

Sulapac received ISO 9001:2015 certification.

2018

Manufacturing innovation for existing machinery

Plastic product manufacturers can use the material with their existing machinery.

2018

First licensing customer Stora Enso

Stora Enso and Sulapac signed a joint development agreement to combat the global plastic waste crisis. Through the agreement, Stora Enso became the first licensor of Sulapac’s materials and technology.

Straw pre-launch with Stora Enso

Sulapac and Stora Enso introduced the bio-based biodegradable straw with outstanding usability.

Europe's 100 hottest start-ups

Wired UK selected Sulapac among the 100 hottest startups in Europe. We received this recognition also in 2019 and 2021.

Sulapac won Worldstar competition

Sulapac won the world championship competition of packaging industry with Kohinoor jewellery packaging for Kultakeskus.

We want sustainability to be an easy choice. Sulapac universal recipe is a drop-in solution for most production lines and molds.
